How To Show Up When You're Just Not Feeling It
How To Show Up When You're Just Not Feeling It

This morning I woke up and felt a sense of dread that it was Thursday again. It's not that I have anything against Thursdays but a few months ago I started a weekly Facebook Live show for Makelight that I host every Thursday at 12pm. I am usually feeling excited about it and can't wait to share things with you but today I just felt I didn't have any thing to give, that perhaps no-one would really notice if I just didn't turn up and that really I wanted to just hide away.

But I know the importance of showing up. I know the importance of making a commitment and sticking to it. If I can show up and help or inspire one person today then that is worth it.

The more I thought about it, the more I could turn my feelings around. I used the following ways to get myself into the right place to go live today and in the process I also brainstormed another bunch of blog post and Makelight Live ideas too. And I did go Live!

I really hope these tips help you when you are not feeling it.

1. Go For A Walk/Run/Swim

This is always where I start when I am not feeling in the groove. If I am short on time then even a short walk around the block is worth it because I know it will help to clear and calm my head.

This helps me to work out whether I'm burnt out or emotionally drained and really do need a rest and break from showing up, or whether I just need to work on it. It is totally okay to take a break when you need to but it's not okay to make excuses when you really can show up if you just get yourself into a better place.

2. Have a favourite drink

Sitting down for a few minutes with a calming cup of peppermint tea or if the weather is warm with a sparkling water, is always a good way for me to give myself a moment. Combining it with a magazine or a few pages of a book works well too!

3. Affirmations/Meditation

I love affirmations and use them every day. Saying "I am worth it" or "I've got this" out loud really does work. I find that positive quotations help me too and I always have a book of lovely quotes by my bed.
I am also a meditation fan, so if I have time for a short meditation then I will do that too.

4. Read Happy Comments

I have a happy jar of lovely comments and moments that always helps me. I dip into it and remember why it's important for me to show up. People do learn from me and I can make a difference.

5. Journal For 5 Minutes

Journalling always helps me to write things out and often helps me to work out why I might be feeling out of sorts.

6. Put On A Happy Tune

Music always makes a difference to my mood. I have plenty of go-to tunes that will make me smile and get me dancing in the kitchen. That always makes me feel better!

7. Write Down Ideas

Taking to paper again, I make a mind map of ideas as they come to me. If I'm feeling like I don't want to show up on social media then I brainstorm ideas of things I could share. If I don't want to go to the networking event then I brainstorm questions to ask people or conversation starters.

Getting my brain flowing by thinking of ideas for whatever situation I am wanting to avoid really helps me.

8. Reward For Showing Up

Treating myself to something for being brave and getting out there is always a good incentive. A long hot bath, a movie, a bunch of flowers, a slice of chocolate cake or a little shopping trip are all good ways to keep myself motivated.

I would love to hear how you convince yourself to show up when it's the last thing you want to do. xo
