Food Photography & Styling Workshop

What a really wonderful day last Saturday was. My lovely and very talented friend Catherine  Frawley (Borrowed Light) came to teach a Food Photography & Styling workshop in the Makelight Studio. It was a complete joy to host this workshop and so much fun.

Catherine packed her cute little car to the brim with amazing props, boards, fabrics and of course plenty of food. She also brought the most incredible sweet treats from Anges de Sucre. Oh My!!

Catherine showed the students how she sets up a scene, explaining each layer of the image and the things she looks for. I think it's so good for people to learn just how much attention to detail goes into food photography.

The morning was spent listening to and watching Catherine and then in the afternoon the students could style their own set-ups and get really hands-on with all the props and food. Catherine was able to give them individual help and attention during this time, which is so valuable.

It was so much fun to see what everyone created and photographed.

Thank you so much Catherine and thank you again to Reshmi for your gorgeous cakes and macarons. xxo

If you would like to join us on our next Food Photography & Styling Workshop then we are doing it all over again in September and we'd love to see you there. Book your place today!

Half Way Through

Wow! It's July already. We are half way through 2015. How on earth did that happen so fast?! I woke up in a bit of a panic about that this morning. My initial thoughts were all about how little I've done and about time slipping away too fast. And then I laughed at myself. In the past six months I've had my first book published, been on an American book tour with my 8 year old, got my first studio, taught lots of lovely workshops, taken on an assistant, been to a conference, taken my family to Berlin and the Cotswolds, started running again and ran my first 10km on Sunday...while down in Brighton for this Summer's Makelight Weekend, and I've gained over 20k new followers on Instagram.

Yep, it's been a good first half of 2015, that's for sure! I'm feeling pretty proud today, even if it took me a while to realise that.

The one thing that hasn't been so great this year so far is my blogging...or rather my lack of blogging. Writing my book had such an effect on my blog in a way that I didn't really predict. And once I did realise that I kind of completely lost my way and I've really been missing it. I've been missing it because for me, writing my blog is a way of reflecting on what's going on and keeping me grounded in the hear and now, rather than always rushing to what's next.

My blog also helps and encourages me to be the mother that I want to be. There are so many things I plan to do with my children but it's all so easy to get too busy or distracted, and lose the moment. Knowing that I can do an activity or have an adventure and then blog about it always pushes me to actually do what I've planned to. It helps me to make that extra effort. Not in a crazy, competitive parenting way but just in a gentle, soft nudge. And then we have this beautiful record to look back on.

So, here goes. I'm ready to embrace blogging again. And even if no-one is really reading it and you're all over on Instagram liking my images or over on Pinterest repinning my pins, that's completely okay. This space is for me and my little ones but the door is always open for you to come in and join in the fun! xo
